Death is weird when you’re a bartender. You spend hours every week asking the same questions. What are we drinking today? How about a side of ranch? Lettuce,tomato or pickles on that burger? It’s the same questions, same shifts over and over. The same construction crews come in, or business lunch and you remember their drinks but never their names. But every once in a while a chair gets filled with someone who becomes more than a regular. You stop asking for small talk from them. They learn your kids names, and summer plans. You laugh with them, cry with them. The relationship you create becomes the one that makes the hard shifts worth it. Then that regular becomes family, and you start to think-what would we do without them?!
